Fiji – India Engage in Sports Diplomacy

With the Fijian Government announcing in the 2019-2020 National Budget on an increase in tax rebate from 47% to 75% on film making, the world’s largest movie makers are showing more interest to tap into Fiji’s film industry.
Following a recent meeting held between Fiji’s High Commissioner to India, Yogesh Punja, the Indo-Fiji Business Promotion Association (IFBPA) and Indo-Fiji Film and Cultural Forum (IFFCF) in New Delhi, India, the Indian entertainment industry now seeks to take advantage of Fiji’s lucrative offer.
As a result, Fiji’s High Commissioner to India Mr Yogesh Punja is initiating a special trade mission from Fiji to India that will explore these opportunities.
Apart from film making, the trade mission will also explore partnerships in the key sectors and industries including:Agriculture (Technical and Equipment Suppliers), ICT (Tech Transfer), Renewable Energy (Solar, Biogas,), Health and Pharmaceutical Industry, Trade and Investment, Tourism Industry (through Bollywood platform), Hospitality Sector (engagement with Art and Craft Institutes.
The Indo-Fiji Film and Cultural Forum was launched at Marwah Studios at Film City, Noida on 29th March 2017 with the aim of promoting art and culture with Fiji. The main objective of its establishment was intended to invite and promote Indian film makers to shoot films in Fiji.
The Indo-Fiji Business Promotion Association on the other hand is a non-government agency which was launched in February 2014 in New Delhi by the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Civil Service and Communications Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The main aim of this Association is to promote and facilitate trade and investment between India and Fiji. It enables Fijian and Indian business communities to communicate directly, share market intelligence and facilitate business and joint ventures. It also aspires to enable the flow of technology, capital and experts.
The new cooperation of uniting the resources and expertise of IFBPA and IFFCF is an effort led by Fiji’s High Commissioner to India Mr Yogesh Punja, with an aim of enhancing the cultural exchanges given that the two countries share many common elements of history, culture, language and cuisines.
