The Fijian Government has embarked on a collaborative effort with the Tongan community in Fiji to mobilise support for the Kingdom of Tonga through provisions of relief supplies and humanitarian assistance.
This was conveyed at the Donor Coordinating Meeting held virtually between the Fijian Government officials, Tongan community representatives, Diplomatic Missions, International Organisations and Donor Partner representatives.
The meeting also enabled officials from the Tongan National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) to provide an update on the current situation on the ground as well as outline the immediate recovery needs.
In convening the meeting, the Permanent Secretary Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yogesh Karan highlighted that Fiji stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Tonga.
He also thanked the donor agencies and development partners who have rendered their support for Tonga, while acknowledging the potential partnerships to mobilise humanitarian assistance.
The Fijian Government is working with development partners and members of the public in our efforts to assist Tonga in the provision of humanitarian and relief assistance based on the needs list communicated to Fiji through the Tongan National Emergency Management Office.
The Tongan officials were grateful for the opportunity to engage directly with Fijian officials and ultimately strengthen the levels of cooperation between the two countries.
