The diplomatic relations between Fiji and Chile provide opportunities for profound engagements in important areas of development including trade and tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.
This was highlighted at a courtesy call received by the Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Office of the Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs, Mr Yogesh Karan from the Non-Resident Ambassador of Chile to Fiji, Mr Ignacio Llanos Mardones, yesterday (14/9/22).
PS Karan congratulated Mr Mardones on his new appointment and thanked him for his visit to Fiji, which demonstrates the cordial relations and partnership between Fiji and Chile. He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to scale up collaborations with Chile in shared priorities, mainly in areas that promote socioeconomic development.
PS Karan said Fiji is working closely with its development partners to build a greener, bluer and sustainable future by nurturing regional and global solidarity. He commended Chile’s ongoing commitment to proactive climate action and noted Chile’s significant progress in passing the new energy efficiency law aimed at reducing emissions across major sectors such as the mining industry and transport.
Fiji looks forward to Chile’s support in building climate resilience and partnership leading up to COP27 in November.
In response, Ambassador Mardones said Chile attaches great importance to Fiji and appreciates Fiji’s strong leadership on climate and oceans.
He said during his tenure he will make every effort to strengthen the relations between the two nations and maximise opportunities that would benefit both countries.
