The 3rd World Climate Industry Expo (WCE) was held in Busan, the Republic of Korea on 27 May, 2023.
It showcased the latest technologies and policies in the global climate environment and energy fields to cope with the climate crisis.
Based on the theme “Rising above the Climate Crisis towards Sustainable Prosperity” the Expo focused on a variety of new technologies to respond to the climate crisis.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka led the Fiji delegation to the Expo and was one of the four keynote speakers at the first Session of the Leaders Summit highlighting, “Ocean Conservation in the face of Climate Change”.
In his keynote remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Gavoka reiterated that Fiji’s leadership and commitment on the preservation of the world’s ocean is one of the most important tasks our nation has ever undertaken because our very culture, traditions, values and customs are inter linked to the ocean which sustains our people.
“We firmly believe that we cannot have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Gavoka further emphasized that it is our paramount interest to maintain a clean and healthy ocean to ensure that our Blue Pacific Continent remains a pristine tourist destination.
He also reminded that Fiji will continue to be the leading voice for more climate ambition and action, for the region and for climate-vulnerable countries everywhere.
Fiji has signed and ratified the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the sea, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
The WCE was officially opened by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Honourable Han Duck-soo, and attended by the Head of Governments, distinguished guests and representatives from climate vulnerable countries.
