Further advancing Fiji and New Zealand’s shared aspirations and commitment as underpinned in the Duavata Partnership Agreement is “top on the agenda” as Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka embarks on an official visit to Aotearoa this week.
Previously holding the Office of Prime Minister between 1992 and 1999, Prime Minister Rabuka last visited New Zealand in his capacity as prime minister in 1998.
This official visit marks 25 years since the last State Visit from a Prime Minister of Fiji to New Zealand. Tomorrow, Hon. Rabuka will meet with Prime Minister Rt. Hon Chris Hipkins, the Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Nanaia Mahuta and Climate Change Minister Hon. James Shaw to discuss Fiji and New Zealand’s bilateral relations and other issues of common interest.
The Head of the People’s Coalition Government said he is looking forward to meeting with his counterpart and Members of his Cabinet as New Zealand and Fiji share a long standing relationship, based on close cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Rabuka will also meet with the Deputy Leader of Opposition Hon. Nicola Willis. In a statement, Hon. Hipkins said he is also looking forward to reaffirming New Zealand’s support as a trusted friend and bilateral partner to Fiji.
Other important issues of discussion will focus on regional defence and security and climate change, sports, culture and people-to-people links.
Hon. Rabuka will later participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. As traditional partners in the Pacific family, Aotearoa New Zealand and Fiji also aim to renew their commitment to building an inclusive, resilient, secure and sustainable future for our Blue Pacific Continent.
