A five member delegation from the Qingdao City, the third largest city of the People’s Republic of China is visiting Fiji this week to explore prospects for cooperation in economy, trade and investment, fisheries and maritime cooperation.
The delegation led by Deputy Secretary – General, CPC Qingdao Municipal Committee, Ms Lin Bin paid a courtesy call to the Director Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Josefa Tuima.
Mr Tuima welcomed the delegation and acknowledged China’s commitment to further strengthen relations with Fiji, particularly through initiatives aimed at promoting economic development, and trade & investment.
He also welcomed the discussions on potential cooperation opportunities in the led up to a forum and exposition on Marine Cooperation and Development to be hosted by the Qingdao City in September 2024.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted prospects for cooperation in development areas such as education, science and technology among tertiary institutions, fisheries cooperation such as aquaculture, port and shipping industry, and cooperation in the service industry.
Qingdao City is a part of Shandong Province with a robust maritime industry, a busy seaport ranking the 4th largest in China, and record service of 222 shipping routes to over 700 international ports.
As more than 30 sister cities cooperation have been established by Qingdao City with other countries, the likelihood of a sister city with a city in Fiji should be able to generate further discussion for the benefit of both countries and to be able to build a solid partnership going forward.
