The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua received an introductory call from the new Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to the Republic of Fiji H.E Kim Jin Hyung.
At a meeting convened today (3.7.24) at the Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Hon. Qereqeretabua welcomed Ambassador Kim and expressed Fiji Government’s continued commitment to further strengthen development cooperation and relations with the Republic of Korea.
Hon. Qereqeretabua acknowledged the ongoing support provided by the Republic of Korea in vital areas namely in renewable energy, health, education, fisheries and civil aviation, along with initiatives led the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) which further supports Fiji’s development goals and the livelihood of local communities in Fiji.
On the same note, Hon. Qereqeretabua welcomed prospects for enhanced collaboration in mutual interests such as socio-economic development, climate change, disaster risk resilience and renewable energy.
Discussions also highlighted the potentials to boost air connectivity via the resumption of the direct Nadi-Seoul flights to promote greater trade, tourism and investment exchanges between the two countries. Additionally, the Assistant Minister assured Ambassador Kim of MFA’s continued support to work closely with the Embassy of Korea in Suva to elevate the levels of cooperation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kim said his honored to serve in Fiji and is pleased to be back after 40 years, when he first visited our shores as a young navy officer.
Ambassador Kim reasserted the commitment by Republic of Korea to further strengthen relations with Fiji particularly with Fiji’s status as the hub of the Pacific region.
He highlighted the proposed visit to Fiji this year by the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea Chung Byung-won and the new opportunities for cooperation it would present.
Ambassador also spoke on the upcoming high level meetings organised by Korea which would be platforms to deepen engagements between the two countries. These includes the Seoul Defense Dialogue (SDD) 2024 hosted by the Ministry of National Defense of ROK, in Seoul from 11-12 September 2024.
Fiji is invited to the Dialogue which aims to promote military diplomacy, enable the defense ministers to share knowledge and experiences, and enhance collaboration to establish freedom and prosperity.
ROK will also host the Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Military Domain (REAIM) Summit 2024 in Seoul from 9-10 September. An invitation has been extended to the Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka and Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Hon. Pio Tikoduadua to attend the Summit.
Ambassador Kim is optimistic that during his tenure the cooperation between the two nations will further strengthen and yield benefits for the two nations and its peoples.
