Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka met with the Ambassador of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), H.E Carson K. Sigrah this week.
The meeting looked at cooperation opportunities ahead of the 53rd Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting (53 PIFLM) scheduled next month in Tonga.
Ambassador Sigrah conveyed his appreciation on Fiji’s role in reuniting the Pacific Islands Forum especially Prime Minister Rabuka and his reconciliatory efforts with the Micronesian sub-region.
It was also an opportunity to renew Fiji and FSM’s commitment and cooperation to advance the bilateral relations that has spanned over 36 years.
In this respect, Fiji and FSM look forward to reviewing the Development Cooperation Agreement (DCA) to realign engagements on the key priorities such as connectivity, climate resilience and financing, Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) Fishing, defence and security to mention a few.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka thanked Ambassador Sigrah for the exchange of views to strengthen cooperation in the Pacific and beyond.
Prime Minister Rabuka affirmed Fiji’s commitment to regional solidarity while citing the importance of Ocean of Peace Concept, to promote and uphold peace and prosperity in the Pacific and to the greater global community. Prime Minister Rabuka looks forward to discussing the concept with Forum Leaders in Tonga.
Additionally, Prime Minister welcomed the prospects for cooperation opportunities with police forces for both countries noting the increase in transnational organized crime in the region. This was highly welcomed by Ambassador Sigrah as beneficial to both countries as well as the region.
Connectivity, both air and maritime connections, was also discussed.
In his remarks, Ambassador Sigrah commended Prime Minister Rabuka for his exceptional leadership and vision for the region. He expressed his support for the Oceans of Peace concept while also conveying FSM’s commitment to work closely with Fiji to promote initiatives for the benefit of the two nations, and the Pacific peoples.
Ambassador Sigrah said, “The meeting today was an opportunity for us all to become more mindful of our relationship between the Federated States of Micronesia and the People of Fiji, rekindling the close ties between our two nations, and affirming FSM’s core values of peace, unity, and liberty.”
Fiji and FSM will commemorate with 36th anniversary of our relationship on 5 August 2024.
