Pacific leaders will convene in Tokyo, Japan this week for the 10th Summit of the Pacific Island Leaders Meeting (PALM10).
As he did in 1997 when the first PALM Summit was convened, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is leading the Fiji government delegation to the 10th Summit.
PM Rabuka said he is looking forward to joining leaders from the 18 member states of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to further strengthen the forum’s vision for a resilient Pacific region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity.”
In building a stronger and resilient Pacific, the PALM10 Summit will also be an opportunity to renew the PALM partnership between Japan and the Pacific countries, ensuring that all Pacific people can lead free, healthy and productive lives.
Discussions at the Summit will also focus on harmonising implementation of the PIF Leaders’ 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy, for climate action, environment, people-centered economic development, and technology and connectivity.
PM Rabuka will attend a series of official engagements, including a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Hon. Fumio Kishida.
The bilateral meeting between the two leaders is expected to further strengthen Fiji and Japan’s diplomatic relations, which over the years, has extended to important areas including climate change, disaster risk management, health, and social and economic development.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan International Cooperation System (JICS), which has, over the years empowered communities in Fiji through various development programmes.
Accompanying the Prime Minister are Mr. Pita Wise, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Isoa Talemaibua, Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Mr. Kamal Chetty, CEO of Investment Fiji.
The PALM10 Summit begins on 16th July and concludes on 18th July.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-Operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Hon. Manoa Kamikamica will be acting Prime Minister while Hon. Rabuka is away for the Summit.
