Hon. Qereqeretabua attends the UNGA high level ministerial meeting on strengthening multilateralism

Strong international cooperation, diplomacy, and a commitment to upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter (UN) are indispensable. All of which are underscored in Fiji’s recently launched Foreign Policy White Paper.

This message was conveyed by the Assistant Minister for Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua while representing Fiji at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High Level Ministerial Meeting convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States.

Based on the theme, “Strengthening Multilateralism by Upholding the United Nations Charter,” the Meeting highlighted importance of International peace and security as critical for sustainable development with perspectives of Small Islands States.

In her remarks, Hon. Qereqeretabua said the Small States rely on the multilateral system for our security and survival.

“It is encouraging to note though, that in our collective response to our shared interests and common challenges, Small States continue to remain steadfast in our commitment to the rules-based order and all its values.

“We may be small in size, but by joining forces we create waves. We must actively engage and trust the multilateral system, to have our voice heard and punch above our weight,” Hon. Qereqeretabua said.

Further, Hon. Qereqeretabua urged the Forum that we must uphold multilateralism, through upholding our shared responsibilities under the UN Charter and international law.

“All States have a collective responsibility to strengthen the UN and the multilateral system in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities. Fiji is committed to do its part and we hope that all others are ready to demonstrate the same level of commitment, action and ambition,” Hon. Qereqeretabua stated.

Fiji’s participation at the UNGA is crucial on global issues that directly affects our national interests such as climate change, peace and security, economic resilience. Multilateral cooperation is important to giving Fiji the leverage it simply cannot apply as a small state working on its own.

More importantly, Fiji’s representation at the UN is vital to swiftly navigate our multifaceted challenges by strengthening international partnerships to unlock new opportunities to advance the socioeconomic development and welfare of our nation and our people.
