The Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a briefing for Ministerial Agencies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office, this week on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024.
The purpose of the briefing was to update and inform Ministries of the outcomes of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA79) and to prepare for the upcoming UNESCAP Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (PFSD).
The briefing was held by the Director for Multilateral Affairs, Ms. Keleni Seruvatu.
In her brief, Ms. Seruvatu highlighted the linkages between local, regional, and global mandates and the importance of ensuring consistency in messaging across Ministerial Agencies, and stakeholders.
Ms. Seruvatu also spoke to the issues raised at the recent UN General Assembly, which included the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] and the adoption of the Pact of the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration of Future Generations.
Sea-level rise has also been raised as a significant global issue, with the Pacific pushing for it to be a permanent agenda item at the General Assembly.
Further, Ms. Seruvatu encouraged Ministries active engagement at the sessions for the Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok.
The efforts to better coordinate, and align policy positions across Agencies is a key contribution towards meeting the objectives of Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, and also the targets set out in the Fiji’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2025 – 2029.
