Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Fiji and Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua sat in a panel on Wednesday 23 October 2024 themed, Intersectional Political Leadership: Empowering Underrepresented Voices.
The panel explored the importance of inclusion and representation of marginalised groups, addressing systemic barriers that hinder their participation in decision-making.
Hon. Qereqeretabua highlighted the need to strengthen female representation in politics in Fiji and across Commonwealth countries in alignment with SDG 5.5 which is to ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.
At the same time, Hon. Qereqeretabua shared her experiences as one of the few women leading in Fiji’s Parliament.
As Deputy Speaker, Hon. Qereqeretabua discussed the importance of creating supportive environments that encourage women’s political participation while addressing challenges such as online abuse that deter women from entering politics.
