The United Nations (UN) remains committed to supporting Fiji and the Pacific Island countries in achieving their priorities set out in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. This support was reaffirmed during a courtesy call paid earlier this week to the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Raijeli Taga from the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) to Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, Mr Dirk Wagener.
The meeting convened at the Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Suva, provided an opportunity to discuss current and future engagements aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs), and building a responsive and inclusive multilateral system that can effectively address global challenges.
In her welcoming remarks, Dr. Taga acknowledged the UN’s continued collaboration and support to the Fiji and the broader Pacific region. She reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and the UN global peacekeeping efforts.
In his remarks, Mr. Wagener congratulated Dr. Taga on her recent appointment and acknowledged excellent collaboration between Fiji and the UN, including Fiji’s long-standing support to multilateralism.
Mr. Wagener extended his appreciation for Fiji’s leading role in promoting peace in the Pacific region, as well as globally, demonstrated through its contribution to UN peacekeeping as one of the top contributors (per capita) of troops. In recognition of this significant contributions, Fiji has been invited to showcase its leadership in advancing regional and global peace at high-level global forums such as the UN Peacebuilding Commission.
He reassured that the UN will stay true and committed to the UN Charter and to its founding principles and values and to supporting the Pacific countries in addressing critical developmental challenges in the region.
The UN and Fiji have continued to collaborate on key priorities including climate change, oceans and the environment, women empowerment, health and education, amongst others.
