The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honourable Viliame Gavoka met with the Director of the Peace Corps, Ms Carol Spahn, during her visit to Fiji this week.
The deliberations highlighted the ongoing partnership between the Peace Corps and Fiji, including the expansion of Peace Corps operations supporting community development initiatives in the country.
Acting Prime Minister Gavoka expressed his appreciation for the Peace Corps’ valuable contributions through the volunteers’ service. These services are delivered under initiatives such as the Community Economic Empowerment Project (CEEP), a collaboration with Fiji’s Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Women and Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises.
On a similar note, the Acting Prime Minister Gavoka welcomed the proposed collaboration to be explored through the rollout of the Blue Pacific Youth Initiative in Fiji.
It will focus on climate adaptation as well as youth engagement. This initiative reflects US’s efforts to deliver commitments pertaining to the US-Pacific Islands Forum Summit outcomes of last September.
Director Spahn emphasized her inaugural visit to Fiji reaffirms the Peace Corps’ dedication to supporting Fiji’s development efforts.
She thanked the Government of Fiji for the collaborative efforts and expressed enthusiasm of her team in identifying new areas of cooperation to elevate the partnership.
