AG meets UN Secretary General for Political Affairs

FIJI’S leadership role in climate change and Fiji’s success in a number of spheres dominated talks between Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr. Miroslav Jenca.

At the meeting, the Attorney-General reviewed Fiji’s preparatory efforts in the lead-up to COP23, to be held in Bonn, Germany in November. The two men also discussed the status of Tropical Cyclone Winston rehabilitation efforts in Fiji and explored opportunities for the UN to support Fiji’s preparations for the upcoming general elections in 2018.

“Fiji has shown that we are very keen to take the lead within UN frameworks on issues of vital importance to every person on earth, as we fight against the destructive forces of climate change and the degradation of our oceans and seas. We also look forward to cooperate with the UN here at home, particularly as we look to build on the success of our general elections in 2014 by holding smooth elections next year,” said the AG.

During the meeting, Secretary-General Jenca also sought the Fijian Government’s support for the opening of an ‘UN House’ to accommodate all the UN bodies in Fiji under one roof. He also commended Fiji for its contribution towards the United Nations Peace-keeping missions and for working together with the UN to meet the Sustainable Development Goals
