The Republic of Fiji and Japan established their diplomatic relations in 1970. The two countries have been enjoying friendly and symbiotic relations since. Such relations have been developed through reciprocal visits at the Ministerial and Senior Officials levels including people-to-people exchange and business ties.
As of October 2012, 532 Japanese nationals are recorded to be residing in Fiji and 150 Fijian nationals in Japan.
Cumulative Grant received from Japan for the period 1975-2012 equates to 504.7 million yen.
In 2011, in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and contributing to reconstruction of the tsunami devastated areas, the Government of the Republic of Fiji allocated twenty (20) scholarships to students from the devastated region Tohoku to undertake a year’s of education in Fiji.
