Fiji and India have reaffirmed committed to further strengthening the bilateral relations and collaboration with focus in the key areas such as infrastructure development, renewable energy, climate change, health, information technology, education, sustainable agriculture and promoting cultural and people-to-people ties.
This was conveyed today to the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr Raijeli Taga while receiving an introductory courtesy call from the new High Commissioner of India to Fiji H.E. Mr. Suneet Mehta. The meeting held at the Fiji Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suva, provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss ongoing projects and explore potential future collaborations to deepen the engagements.
Dr. Taga in her remarks acknowledged the ongoing cooperation between the two nations, especially through initiatives that align with Fiji’s development goals. She extended appreciation to the Government of India for its commitment to supporting Fiji in major development projects, such as the 100-bed Super Speciality Hospital in Fiji.
Dr. Taga reasserted Fiji’s commitment to further elevate cooperation through close collaboration between Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fiji, India in Fiji (High Commission of India, Suva) and Fiji’s High Commission in New Delhi, India.
Additionally, Dr. Taga congratulated High Commissioner Mehta on his new diplomatic posting in Fiji and expressed optimism that the bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two nations will continue to elevate to new levels.
In his remarks, High Commissioner Mehta stated that India and Fiji relations have immense potential, and he looks forward to expanding partnership in existing and new areas. He highlighted that India’s focus is on enhancing the wide-ranging partnership by aligning India’s development assistance with Fiji’s needs, focusing on infrastructure investment, capacity building, skill development and climate-resilient initiatives.
He said India remains committed to further strengthening our friendship and collaboration, stating that strong ties between India and Fiji are deeply rooted in history, culture, and shared values.
Further, High Commissioner Mehta emphasised that India is undertaking one of the Pacific region’s largest development projects – a 100-bed Super Speciality Hospital in Fiji.
Announced by Prime Minister of India Honourable Shri Narendra Modi during the Forum for India-Pacific Island Countries (FIPIC) III Summit in 2023, this project is progressing steadily. Upon completion, the project will significantly address the healthcare sector challenges in Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
