Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to opening its embassy in Israel.
As the Coalition Cabinet prepares to meet in Suva next week, one key topic on the agenda will be the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made these remarks during a bilateral meeting with Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sa’ar Gideon Moshe on the margins of the 61st session of the Munich Security Conference that opened in Germany today (Friday 14th February, 2025).
Discussions during the meeting also focused on further strengthening partnership in areas of mutual interest, including the agriculture sector, security and peacekeeping, and climate action assistance.
Prime Minister Rabuka took the opportunity to thank the Government and the people of Israel for the support rendered to Fiji and its people over the years.
Israel and Fiji established diplomatic relations in 1970, and have forged partnerships across security and peacekeeping, and especially issues related to climate change.
Over the past decade, Israel and Fiji have worked closely to combat the impacts of climate change, with Israel’s world-renowned, groundbreaking technology playing a central role in this collaboration
At the outset, Foreign Minister Moshe has extended an invitation to the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Government of Israel, to visit the Holy Land as part of efforts to further strengthen our diplomatic relations.
During the meeting, it was also highlighted that the Government of Israel is ready to assist Fiji with its plans to establish its embassy there.
In response to a request from Prime Minister Rabuka, Foreign Minister Moshe also pledged support for providing patrol boats to strengthen Fiji’s war against illicit drugs.
The last time Israel provided patrol boats to the Fiji Navy was in 1987, with four Dabur class boats.
Both sides acknowledged the opportunity to meet and discuss important areas for further cooperation.
