Fiji – Korea Bilateral Relations to Soar to Newer Heights

The strengthened bilateral relations between Fiji and Japan over the last 50 years is testament of the unprecedented commitment to advance shared values and aspirations of the two nations. This message was conveyed during a courtesy call made by the new Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji His Excellency Mr. Kawakami Fumihiro to the Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama in his office this afternoon.
In congratulating Ambassador Fumihiro on his new diplomatic role, Prime Minister Bainimarama said Fiji and Japan’s partnership is characterised by mutual respect, sovereignty, mutual understanding and cooperation.
PM Bainimarama commended the Government of Japan for its enormous assistance through initiatives like the “Adopt a School Program” and livelihood projects that support Fiji and the region’s development.
He said Fiji is working closely with its regional and global development partners to seek innovative solutions to cohesively address challenges faced, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of climate change.
The Head of the Fijian Government thanked Japan for supporting Fiji’s response in the containment of COVID-19 and the collective effort towards building back better.
In terms of the STC Yasa recovery efforts, PM Bainimarama said the Response and Resilience Plan (RRP) is being mapped out and Fiji will engage with its development partners in accordance with the response plans, activities and funding requirements.
Whilst commending the Japanese Government for its commitment to the Pacific Island Leaders Meeting (PALM) process, PM Bainimarama said that Fiji looks forward to attending the 9th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM9) scheduled for June this year to further discuss a number of initiatives that is of mutual interest and will benefit both nations.
In conveying Fiji’s best wishes to Japan for convening the 2021 International Olympics, the Prime Minister said that Fiji looks forward to defending our rugby7s gold medal in Japan later in the year.
In response, Ambassador Fumihiro thanked PM Bainimarama and the Fijian people for the warm hospitality rendered to him upon his arrival to Fiji and said that he is grateful for the support provided by the Fijian Government to work closely with the Government of Japan through the Embassy of Japan in Fiji to advance the collaborations between both countries.
