The 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Fiji and the Republic of Korea is testament to the commitment and aspirations for continued bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
In recognising this momentous occasion, congratulatory notes between the Presidents of the two countries were exchanged between the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote and Korean Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Park Young-kyu at the State House.
President Konrote acknowledged the enhanced partnership of the two nations based on their mutual understanding and respect for each other’s sovereignty and shared prosperity.
President Konrote said that Fiji is grateful to the Government of Korea for its contributions to Fiji’s socioeconomic development over the years and most recently the assistance provided by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
In reaffirming Fiji’s partnership with Korea, President Konrote reiterated on the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Konrote expressed Fiji’s appreciation of Korea’s contribution and commitment in championing our mutual interests globally, with emphasis on strategic engagements in the areas of climate change, green energy, health, education and fisheries.
Fiji established formal diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea on 30th January 1971.
The Korean government maintains presence in Suva through an Embassy as well as through the KOICA office, which is a regional office mandated to serve the Official Development Assistance (ODA) needs of the Pacific Island Countries.
Through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) funding mechanisms, headquartered in Korea called the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Fiji has been provided funding assistance in the area of Climate Change. Fiji and Korea have numerous MOUs and mutual areas of cooperation, including Korean investment in the energy sector.
