Fiji and Papua New Guinea (PNG) have reasserted their commitment to regional solidarity and mutual cooperation on issues of interest to both nations.
This was conveyed yesterday at a meeting held between the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka and the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) Honourable Mr. James Marape. Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Rabuka thanked Prime Minister Marape for his official visit to Fiji which, symbolizes strengthened cooperation between the two nations.
“Fiji and PNG’s cordial relations is recognised through the profound history of the unique Melanesian culture and the historical links our two nations have shared since 1975,” he said.
The Head of the People’s Coalition Government highlighted the positive outcomes of the meeting with PNG Prime Minister.
“I note with interest the prospects for collaboration in our collective efforts on economic recovery, climate mitigation, peace and security, trade and investment, sports development to mention a few,” Prime Minister Rabuka said.
He said Fiji also appreciates PNG’s commitment towards the development of our Pacific region through the collective priorities enshrined in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
The meeting also highlighted that PNG stands ready to support Fiji’s efforts to reopen its Mission in PNG. In response, Prime Minister Marape reasserted PNG’s commitment to advance economic cooperation with Fiji. He also commended Prime Minister Rabuka’s strong leadership in reuniting the Pacific solidarity.
“Our nations have shared history, we have common heritage and bonding. We belong to one Pacific, we belong to one Melanesia. PNG and Fiji are working side by side to build a brighter future for our people,” Prime Minister Marape said.
He thanked Prime Minister Rabuka and the Fiji Government for the kind hospitality and also invited him to visit PNG at a time convenient to him.
