Dubai, 3 Dec, 2023 – In a landmark meeting aimed at advancing collaborative efforts in the fight against climate change, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji met with Minister Teo Chee Hean of Singapore, who is in charge of the Climate Change Secretariat.
The meeting served as the platform to announce a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year in May, following cabinet approval, marking a significant stride in bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
The MOU signifies Singapore’s commitment to providing valuable technical assistance in the development of collaborative emission reduction projects in Fiji. This collaboration, conducted under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, specifically focuses on carbon credits. The initiative aims to facilitate the design and implementation of greenhouse gas emissions reduction activities, ensuring the transfer of credits from projects in Fiji to Singapore without compromising environmental integrity.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed gratitude for Singapore’s support, stating, “This collaboration is a testament to the shared responsibility we bear in addressing the global climate crisis. Fiji is honored to partner with Singapore under the Paris Agreement, and this MOU signifies a commitment to innovative solutions for emissions reduction and removal projects.”
Minister Teo Chee Hean emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate challenges. “Singapore is proud to collaborate with Fiji on this critical initiative. Our technical assistance aims to facilitate the transfer of credits, supporting Fiji’s efforts in emissions reduction and reinforcing our joint commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement,” he stated. The collaborative efforts outlined in the MOU will not only contribute to Fiji’s climate resilience but also demonstrate the spirit of international cooperation in achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Both leaders expressed optimism about the positive impact of this collaboration and the potential for future joint initiatives to combat climate change.
