Fiji’s High Commission in London holds bilateral accreditation to four countries
United Kingdom
Fiji and the United Kingdom share historical connections, dating back to Fiji’s colonial past under British rule until gaining independence on October 10th, 1970. Since then, our nations have maintained robust diplomatic ties, marked by frequent high-level visits, cultural exchanges, and collaboration across various sectors. The UK stands as a significant trading partner for Fiji, with bilateral trade including exports of key Fijian commodities like sugar, textiles, and seafood to the UK market, presenting mutual investment opportunities. Notably, military and defense cooperation form a crucial aspect of our relationship, with many Fijians serving in the British Armed Forces. Moreover, the UK extends development assistance to Fiji through targeted programs addressing climate change resilience, education, and governance. strong people-to-people connections exit between Fiji and the UK, fostered by educational exchanges, tourism, volunteer programmes and cultural interactions.
Republic of Ireland
Fiji and Ireland share a rich historical connection dating back to the early 1900s when Irish missionaries arrived in Fiji to engage in development work. Since then, our nations have collaborated on critical issues, including economic development, security, and disaster response. In August 2022, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, President of the Republic of Fiji, met with his Irish counterpart, His Excellency Michael D. Higgins, President of the Republic of Ireland, reaffirming their mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. During their meeting, they discussed pressing global challenges, such as climate change adaptation, defense cooperation, and the importance of multilateralism. Additionally, they touched upon the implications of EU and Brexit negotiations, emphasizing their dedication to upholding a rules-based international order. The Government of Ireland’s International Education Scholarships offer advanced degree study opportunities to Fijian students, providing an excellent chance for Fijians to pursue higher education in Ireland. Fiji and Ireland formally established diplomatic relations on 19 March, 2002.
Kingdom of Morocco
Fiji and the Kingdom of Morocco maintain robust diplomatic relations built on mutual respect and collaboration. Despite the geographical distance separating our nations, we have actively engaged in productive dialogues and exchanges across various sectors. Since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 2005, both countries have prioritized strengthening bilateral relations through high-level visits and cultural exchanges. While economic and trade relations between Fiji and Morocco are currently modest, there exists significant potential for growth and cooperation, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy. Both our nations share a common commitment to addressing global challenges like climate change and sustainable development, providing ample opportunities for further collaboration and partnership on the international stage.
Holy See
Fiji’s relationship with the Holy See primarily revolves around religious matters. In August 2022, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, President of the Republic of Fiji, had the honor of meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis and officials at the Vatican City. This meeting highlighted the importance of religious diplomacy and the shared values between Fiji and the Holy See. Although our relationship with the Holy See is largely religious in nature, exchanges and high-level collaborations have extended to various global issues such as climate justice, social justice, peace, and global humanitarian efforts. Fiji and The Holy See, established diplomatic relations on 12 September 1978.
