Historically, Fiji and PNG share a rich history dating back to the time of early London Missionary Society [LMS] with Fijian Missionaries spreading the gospel in the Duke of York Islands (now East New Britain). Similarly, thirty four (34) Fijian soldiers who died in World War 2 are buried at the Bita Paka War Cemetery in Rabaul, East New Britain. Notable amongst these is Fiji’s only Victoria Cross reipient, the late Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu VC.
Our two countries now enjoy relations in the field of sports especially in rugby league, athletics, soccer, netball and cricket.
On trade and investment, PNG remains a crucial market for Fiji. Fiji exports manufactured products, electrical accumulators, prepared or preserved mackerel fish, bread and pastries to PNG.
Our relations continues to be strengthened with interactions at different points in our shared history, beginning from the contribution of early Fijian missionaries to now having a growing Fijian Diaspora in Papua New Guinea
In 1996 under the leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji joined the Melanesian Spearhead Group in hopes to collectively contribute to a Melanesia that can become resilient, peaceful and prosperous.
