The longstanding relations between Republic of Fiji and Kingdom of Norway is expected to be enhanced in the areas of socioeconomic development.
This was the major highlight of a meeting held earlier this week between the Norwegian Non-resident Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Paul Gulleik Larsen when he met with the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Major General (Ret’d) Ioane Naivalurua, after presenting his credentials to the President His Excellency Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote.
The key areas of collaboration between the two countries discussed included the Oceans and Marine Resources development, support for the climate change initiatives and peacekeeping. Given Norway’s leading role as the producer and exporter of seafood, Fiji seeks to pursue development cooperation between the two countries in the fisheries sector.
Ambassador Larsen pledged strengthened support to Fiji and also congratulated the nation for a successful election. He also expressed gratitude to the Hon. Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama for being re-elected to his leadership role and commended Fiji’s effort for its strong championship against climate change, especially through COP 23 presidency.
He also congratulated Fiji for being elected into the United Nations Human Rights Council and reiterated that Norway will continue towards the enhancement of cooperation between the two nations. Mr Naivalurua acknowledged Ambassador Larsen for his commitment to support the socioeconomic development opportunities in Fiji.
Fiji established its foreign diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Norway on 18th January 1977.
