Fiji’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Mr. Jovilisi Vulailai Suveinakama, hosted a Vin d’Honneur on 5 December, 2024, to commemorate the presentation of his credentials to His Majesty King Charles III. The event, attended by British government officials, the diplomatic corps and members of Fiji’s diaspora in the UK, highlighted the strong ties between Fiji and the United Kingdom.
In his address, High Commissioner Suveinakama emphasized the UK’s role as a “voice of reason and moral compass” in global affairs, particularly in advocating for civilian protection and humanitarian aid across Europe, Asia, and Africa. High Commissioner Suveinakama reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to standing alongside His Majesty’s Government in promoting #peace and the international rules-based order as foundations for #security and #prosperity.
The High Commissioner further expressed pride in the Fijian soldiers serving in the British Army, both past and present, as a testament to this shared commitment. High Commissioner Suveinakama stated, “The Fijian soldiers in the British Army and those who have served before them demonstrate this commitment, and we will continue to do so.”
Reflecting on his audience with King Charles III, High Commissioner Suveinakama shared His Majesty’s reaffirmed commitment to Fiji, particularly through initiatives on climate change and support for Fiji’s sugar and mahogany industries. The King’s recognition of the 2,000 Fijians serving in the British Armed Forces and his interest in Fiji’s aging infrastructure and migration impacts were also highlighted.
High Commissioner Suveinakama outlined his priorities during his tenure, focusing on addressing mutual concerns with the UK Government and strengthening #bilateral ties. High Commissioner Suveinakama emphasized Fiji’s role as an advocate for the Blue Pacific and Ocean of Peace initiative, expressing confidence in the traditional association with His Majesty’s Government.
Acknowledging the upcoming elections in nearly 70 countries, including the UK, High Commissioner Suveinakama noted the potential impact on global geopolitics while reiterating Fiji’s commitment to peace as a pillar of security and prosperity.
The event also served as a heartfelt tribute to the Fijian community in London and across the United Kingdom. The High Commissioner recognized their resilience and importance, stating, “Without you, the Fiji High Commission may have a voice, but it will be without a soul. You give us the warmth, the face, and the smiles.”
In concluding the occasion, His Excellency proposed a toast to His Majesty and His Majesty’s Government of the United Kingdom on behalf of the President of the Republic of Fiji, the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the Fiji Government, the Great Council of Chiefs, and all Fijians.
