The International Maritime Organization, is inaugurating its seventh Regional Presence Office (RPO) in Suva, Fiji, to serve the Pacific Islands region. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, and IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez solidified this arrangement.
The office will address maritime needs, aligning with national policies and focusing on training, safety, and environmental concerns in the region. The RPO is expected to respond to challenges such as inter-island shipping efficiency and safety standards, assisting Pacific Member States in meeting global ship standards.
This initiative aims to provide more opportunities in the maritime sector, particularly for young people, as highlighted by Pacific Island governments. The Suva office, supported by various countries, will complement existing IMO offices worldwide.
The Pacific Islands region includes 14 IMO Member States, with Fiji hosting the new office.
