This week’s Girmit Day celebrations provides Fiji and India the opportunity for the two nations to strengthen their ties and development cooperation. The Government of the Republic of India’s Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh attendance at the Girmit Day celebrations also provides the opportunity for deliberations on issues of common interest.
Minister Singh will meet with Prime Minister Rabuka and cabinet ministers to discuss prospects for future collaboration.
The visit will commemorate Fiji and India’s special historical and cultural links that were established when the first Indian indentured labourers arrived on our shores on 14 May, 1879.
Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Shri P.S. Karthigeyan said India is pleased to collaborate with the People’s Coalition Government to commemorate the arrival of the first Girmitiyas. He also commended the Government’s efforts to recognise the sacrifices of Girmitiyas and honour their contribution to Fiji’s national development.
The Girmit Day celebrations is based on the theme ‘Commemorating and Celebrating Inclusivity and Diversity’ with various programs staged at different locations until the public holiday.
The Indian delegation will also include Hon. Administrator (Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep) Shri Praful Patel.
