The students and teachers of Vunibokoi District School in Verata, Tailevu were elated today to witness the official opening of the new facilities that will provide them with an enhanced learning environment.
The facilities will cater for more than 130 students from the communities of Kumi village, Navunimono village, Naivuruvuru village.
A large crowd gathered today at the Vunibokoi District School to witness the official handing over of the new facilities by the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, His Excellency, Mr. Masahiro Omura to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence and National Security and Foreign Affairs, Hon. Inia Seruiratu.
The assistance of FJ$983,305 has been provided by the Government of Japan to Vunibokoi District School through the Adopt a School programme for the construction of a new duplex teachers quarters, 3 newly upgraded school buildings that had sustained damages following TC Winston. The assistance provided through the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme also included a donation of 10 sets of student desks and chairs and two sets of teacher desks and chairs for the school.
In his opening address, Ambassador Masahiro said that education is the foundation of nation building and the development of the Vunibokoi District School will significantly contribute towards Fiji’s national development and prosperity.
“The newly constructed buildings now also have category 5 cyclone certification, which means it should be able to withstand a cyclone similar to TC Winston. The newly constructed buildings and facilities will practically help the school enhance the delivery of quality education to its students. This project will also restore normalcy to the schools affected resources and facilities such as the library being used as a classroom and enable it to serve its original purpose,” Ambassador Masahiro said.
“This project is in line with Fiji’s development aspirations. It serves to strengthen friendship between the peoples and government of Japan and Fiji.”
While thanking the officials on behalf of the Vunibokoi District School, the Divisional Education Officer Central, Mr Pravin Nath conveyed his appreciation to the Government of Japan.
“The Ministry of Education and the Fijian Government is indeed grateful for the kind gesture and the partnership between Fiji and Japan. Vunibokoi District School is blessed with the kind donation and the assistance provided by the Government of Japan I am sure will greatly benefit the students in this community” he said.
