Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia, Ajay Bhai Amrit, delivered the Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka’s message to the 7th Indian Ocean Conference held from 9-10 February in Perth, Australia on behalf of the Fiji Delegation.
The Conference was attended by HC Amrit; Mr Pita Wise, Permanent Secretary for Office of the Prime Minister; Ambassador Amena Yauvoli, Fiji’s Ambassador to Indonesia; and officials from the Office of the Prime Minister.
High Commissioner Amrit shared the Prime Minister’s deep appreciation for all oceans as the Pacific’s Ocean Champion.
“Security, stability, and sustainability is not unique to the Indian Ocean or Pacific Ocean or any other ocean. It is very important that when discussing issues relating to the oceans we look at it holistically,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s message emphasized that collective efforts are needed to address challenges, not only as individual sovereign nations, but also as regions, and indeed, the whole of humanity.
The message referenced the concept of “Ocean of Peace” – which emphasizes building a peaceful, stable, secure, and sustainable future and well-being for our oceans.
“If we peacefully protect the ocean, the ocean will protect us.
Discussions on the concept of ‘Ocean of Peace’ has been held at regional and international fora.
“Fiji believes that the ‘Ocean of Peace’ can be our contribution to world order, stability and sustainability including for the Indian Ocean,” High Commissioner Amrit shared.
He concluded with the Prime Minister’s call to action, particularly the need for “genuine and durable dialogue and partnerships between the Pacific and Indian Ocean region to learn from each other and ensure our collective security, facilitate economic prosperity, and safeguard our resources. It is time to do what is necessary for our very survival.”
