Fiji successfully co-hosted a side event on ‘Safe Surgery’ on the margins of the 72nd Session of the World Health Assembly in line with WHO’s global goal on Universal Health Coverage in Geneva, Switzerland yesterday.
The event provided an opportunity for Fiji to reiterate its commitment and visibility at the international platform and discuss challenges Small Islands Developing States encounter in the face of global changing circumstances.
In addressing participants at the World Health Assembly side event, Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said that Universal Health coverage can only be achieved through our collaborative efforts in safe health practices.
“Today we gather as a community of the world to address this core issue because safe surgery is at the heart of Universal Health Coverage and without safe surgery we cannot achieve UHC.
Health services in Fiji has been redesigned to ensure that every Fijian has access to equitable, efficient and affordable health care and that no one is left behind.
The side event was an appropriate avenue to share Pacific Island Countries experiences and their limitations and potential areas of partnership in building capacity and working closely with our global partners.
The event was co-sponsored by Fiji, Tonga, Maldives and Bahamas.
