The Netherlands Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Adrianus M.M. van der Vorst hosted a commemoration this evening at the Paradiso Restaurant & Bar, Suva Lawn Tennis Club, celebrating King’s Day and emphasizing the deepening relationship between Fiji and the Netherlands. (18.04.24)
King’s Day, celebrated annually in the Netherlands, commemorates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander and serves as a unifying event for Dutch communities worldwide.
Addressing the shared interests and challenges between Fiji and the Netherlands, His Excellency highlighted areas of collaboration, including water resilience and sports.
He praised Fiji’s expertise in nature-based solutions and expressed interest in increasing cooperation in the field of sports, particularly promoting women’s participation and facilitating international exchanges. “Fiji has also a lot to offer and what we in the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean can learn from the generations of indigenous communities and their experience on how nature-based solutions will mitigate and adapt to the challenges of today,” His Excellency alluded.
Furthermore, His Excellency emphasized the importance of working together to address global issues such as climate change, water security, and resilience and commended Fiji for its support for the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression, emphasizing the need to uphold the international rules-based order.
Looking towards the future, the Ambassador announced plans to strengthen the Netherlands’ connections with the Pacific region by assigning a colleague to focus on Pacific affairs and expressed optimism about the continued cooperation between Fiji and the Netherlands, emphasizing their commitment to making positive changes for their communities.
The celebration of King’s Day in Fiji not only serves as a reminder of the Netherlands’ rich cultural heritage but also reflects the growing partnership and friendship between the two nations.
