As part of CIDPs blue economy community outreach programme, the CIDP staffs participated in mangrove planting on Korolevu Village foreshore in Savusavu, Vanua Levu. This was part of the organizations program during its 2022 Annual Work Plan meeting held in Wasawasa Lodge, Savusavu
This is a collaboration between the Archipelagic Island States Forum (AIS) Secretariat and the CIDP. As a start of this partnership, the AIS Secretariat and the CIDP worked on setting up a fish net cage farm in the island of Bau. The objective of the Blue Economy Unit’s “Strengthening Human Resilience in the Post-COVID19 World through Healthy Food and Nutrition” project is to improve food security and socio-economic resilience in the context of better nutrition. The CIDP did a pilot project in Rakiraki, Fiji which was rolled out in 4 communities in Rakiraki taking the farm to plate approach. Practical sessions and demonstrations on soil preparation, seed sowing, transplanting and cooking was part of the of the training program.
The collaboration between CIDP (Blue Economy Unit) and the University of Fiji for this USAID project in Vitawa and Mallau communities in Rakiraki serves to empower aquaculture farmers and build their knowledge on aquaculture farming that will enable them to support their livelihoods.
The “Overseas Seminar on Marine Spatial Planning Technology and Blue Economic Development for Pacific Island Countries” was co-hosted by the Pacific Islands Development Forum (CIDP) Blue Economy Unit, China Oceanic Development Foundation (CODF) and the Fujian Institute of Oceanography (FJIO) from August 14th, 2023 to September 4th, 2023. The seminar was delivered first in three CIDP member countries, namely Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji.
The PIDF Blue Economy Unit attended the “International Training on Marine and Coastal Ecological Environment and Disasters Monitoring in Small Islands Developing States” in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China from June 1 to June 15, 2024. Sponsored by the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED) of the Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of the Peoples Republic of China.
Solar panels were successfully installed on the island of Bau, at the chiefly residence of the Gone Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Kaba at Mataiwelagi and at the Ulunivuaka on the eve of the Great Council of Chiefs meeting in May 2023, in addition to the President’s Residence on the 23rd of December 2023.
Site visits for RERIPA funded projects were conducted to assess the progress and challenges of coral restoration projects. The visit included two sites under the Coral Living Lab: Naidiri Community, Sigatoka and BULA Reef at Malolo Island.
