Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama received a courtesy call from the new Non-Resident Ambassador of Ghana to Fiji, His Excellency, Dr Joseph Nii Sai Coffie- Agoe, at the Office of the Prime Minister, this afternoon.
Prime Minister Bainimarama congratulated Ambassador Agoe on his new role and reaffirmed the Fijian Government’s commitment to enhance the relations between the two nations.
He said working in solidarity is at the heart of multilateralism, as it unfolds opportunities for collective actions and solutions on complex challenges imposed by climate change, covid-19 pandemic and recently the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that there are potential opportunities to be pursued in common interest and expressed confidence that during Ambassador Agoe’s tenure the bilateral relations between the two would enhance.
The shared commitment among the two nations to advocate for more ambitious global climate actions through their membership at the UN, Commonwealth at the Organisation of African Caribbean and Pacific (OACPS), was also acknowledged.
The Prime Minister extended the Fijian Government’s best wishes to Ambassador Agoe as he assumes his new role. In response, Ambassador Agoe expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Bainimarama for the opportunity to meet in person and pursue discussions on potential partnership for mutual benefit of the two nations.
“I believe that my new role will give an impetus to strengthen the bilateral relations with Ghana and Fiji. Through the Ghana High Commission in Canberra, we will pursue potential partnership in areas of agriculture, climate change and protection of environment.
“We share common aspirations on climate and oceans, and the challenges we face are also similar. Ghana is close to the Atlantic Ocean, we are already experiencing the impacts of climate change, so like Fiji, we are also calling for urgency in climate actions and oceans conservation.”
He praised Fiji’s leadership at the global and regional stage and the collective commitment in advancing resilient, greener and bluer recovery with climate, oceans at the heart of it all.
He said that despite the geographical location, Ghana is determined to work with Fiji in addressing common challenges.
Ambassador Agoe commended Fiji for its success in reopening international borders and reviving the tourism industry.
“Fiji has a comparative advantage when it comes to tourism so my country has a lot to learn from Fiji and we look forward to cooperate on mutual areas and one of which is people to people links- that goes a long way in building stronger collaboration.”
Ambassador Agoe also acknowledged the Fijian Government for the kind hospitality accorded to him and the visiting diplomats from the Ghana High Commission based in Canberra, Australia.
