“As leaders of the community of Pacific nations, we must mobilize action to address the existential climate threat to ensure a prosperous Blue Pacific Continent for our future generations.”
In his remarks at the second session of the PALM10 Summit, Prime Minister and Minister responsible for Climate Change and Environment, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the challenges of climate change, ocean and environmental degradation which are a lived reality for the people of the Pacific.
The second session of the Summit focused on the theme “Climate Change and Disasters, Ocean and Environment”.
“It is a present day reality that affects every aspect of our lives, and will continue to exert uncertainty on our future. These trans-boundary challenges will continue to hinder our development aspirations and confront our Blue Pacific Continent,” said PM Rabuka.
In the face of climate challenges and threats, PM Rabuka believes that cooperation across our region and with development partners should be strengthened more than ever before.
While we have pushed for elevated global action, PM Rabuka emphasised that we must redouble efforts and mobilize more resources to meet these challenges.
“Fiji seeks enduring partnerships to mobilize the collective strength of the people of our Blue Pacific region in responding to the climate crisis.”
Japanese Prime Minister and co-chair of the PALM10 Summit Hon. Fumio Kishida shared similar sentiments, announcing “the Pacific Climate Resilience Initiative,” which consists of three pillars including;
•Strengthening disaster risk reduction and response capacity;
•Promoting decarbonization; and
•Supporting Pacific-led efforts, with the “All Japan” initiative that mobilizes Japan’s technology, know-how, and financial resources.
PM Rabuka and Pacific Island leaders also welcomed Japan’s efforts and expressed their willingness to continue cooperation with Japan.
