Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, has expressed his deep respect and condolences to the people of Māori and the family of the late Māori King, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, who passed away last Friday.
In Parliament this morning, the Prime Minister said he is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of His Majesty Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII.
“His Majesty’s close ties with Fiji and frequent visits to our shores endeared him to our people, and he will forever remain in our hearts,” said Prime Minister Rabuka.
In describing the late Māori King, Prime Minister Rabuka said that Kiingi Tuheitia was a revered leader whose legacy will continue to inspire and guide the people of Aotearoa and beyond.
“His dedication to his people and his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Māori culture and traditions have left an indelible mark on our leadership,” he added.
The Prime Minister had the privilege of meeting His late Majesty last year during his visit to Fiji to attend the meeting of the re-established Council of Chiefs.
“I note that he led the Māori delegation to Hawaii for the Pacific Festival of Arts and Culture, while Fiji’s delegation was led by the Turaga Vunivalu Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, both leaders reaffirming the importance of proudly expressing our identity and culture in this globalized world,” the Prime Minister further stated.
“May we all find solace in the cherished memories of his wisdom and leadership.
“My thoughts are with all those who mourn his passing,” he concluded.
His late Majesty peacefully passed away at the age of 69 and is survived by his wife, Te Atawhai, their two sons, Whatumoana and Korotangi, and their daughter, Ngā Wai Hono i te Po Paki.
