Human Rights Council elects Nazhat Shameem Khan to serve as its President for 2021

Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Her Excellency Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan, presided over her first session as President of the Human Rights Council this morning at the commencement of the 37th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) with the review of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
Fiji and several other UN member states delivered statements and made recommendations during the review of FSM via pre-recorded video statements in line with the precautionary measures adopted in light of the current pandemic.
Ambassador Khan reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to ensuring the protection of human rights globally amidst growing challenges that threaten the human rights of all peoples and persons.
FSM’s UPR report will be managed by the troika of Mexico, Cameroon, and Nepal.
The 37th UPR session concludes on 29th January 2021.
