Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka received a courtesy visit from the new High Commissioner of India to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Suneet Mehta in his office this afternoon.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss potential future collaborations, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Fiji and India with focus on building partnerships for prosperity.
It also highlighted the ongoing cooperation between two nations in areas of healthcare, renewable energy, information technology, skills development, agriculture, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Rabuka congratulated High Commissioner Mehta and wished him well in his new diplomatic role in Fiji.
He acknowledged the 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations and reaffirmed the Fiji Government’s commitment to further the cooperation.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka also thanked the Government of India for its support in the construction of a 100-bed Super Speciality Hospital in Fiji – one of the most significant initiatives and largest development projects in the Pacific region.
This significant project, announced by the Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi during the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) III Summit in 2023, is progressing steadily and will play a vital role in addressing the healthcare challenges of Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
Discussions also focused on India’s commitment to continue supporting Fiji’s sustainable growth and development, reinforcing the robust bilateral ties between our two nations.
In his remarks, High Commissioner Mehta said that the India-Fiji relations hold immense potential, and he looks forward to expanding the collaboration across both established and emerging sectors.
As the two nations celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year, High Commission Mehta is confident that the partnership between Fiji and India will continue to strengthen and evolve.
He reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to advancing this partnership by aligning its development assistance with Fiji’s national priorities.
