Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand Ratu Inoke Kubuabola presented his credentials via video link to the King’s Representative in the Cook Islands His Excellency Sir Tom Marsters, KBE, today.
The ceremony took place at the Cook Islands High Commission in Wellington and is significant because it is the first time Fiji has a High Commissioner directly accredited to the Cook Islands.
Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, will be based in Wellington, New Zealand where he has served as Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand since July 2022.
In his remarks during the presentation of the letters of credence, Ratu Inoke conveyed the best wishes and cordial greetings of the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere. The letters of credence were received by the Cook Islands High Commissioner to New Zealand, Her Excellency Ms Kairangi Samuela.
He also thanked the Cook Islands people for embracing Fijians who had come to the Cook Islands for work opportunities.
“It is no wonder that the Cook Islands have become a second home for some 800 of our Fijian diaspora, some of whom are now Cook Island citizens. These Fijians – accountants, teachers, chefs and hotel executives – have seamlessly integrated into the tapestry of Cook Island society, contributing their talents in various fields, including hospitality, education and financial sectors.
“We are grateful to the Cook Islands Government and its people for the genuine warmth that has been extended to our citizens in this regard.”
“As island nations, Fiji and Cook Islands have much in common. We share similar views and positions and have worked together with other Pacific Island countries to address pressing regional and global challenges,” Ratu Inoke said.
Fiji hopes to sign the Development Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the Cook Islands during the Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka’s visit to the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) Leaders Retreat next month in Cook Islands. The DCA presents a valuable opportunity to share best practices, expertise and to focus on best development outcomes for both countries.
