Fiji commemorated the Remembrance Day 2020 with theme, “Lest We Forget,” to honour the sacrifices made by the many servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed their lives for our country.
The program held at the National War Memorial was attended by the War veterans with their families and Senior Government Officials, members of the disciplined forces, Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Fiji Police Force, Fiji Correction Services, Ex-servicemen association.
The wreath-laying ceremony was led by His Excellency, the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote, Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, members for the diplomatic corps, members of the disciplined forces and President of the Returned Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Association.
This ceremony conveyed honor and respect to all the servicemen and servicewomen who have made the ultimate sacrifice in their line of duty and their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
At the 11th hour, a minute of silence was observed to remember those Fijian men and women in the disciplined forces that served in missions like World War I, War World War II, Malaya, UNIFIL Lebanon, British Army and other peacekeeping missions.
Fiji’s contributions for the United Nations Peacekeeping is also significant, for more than 40 years, Fijian peacekeepers have defended the defenceless in some of the world’s most conflict-ridden regions.
Fijian peacekeepers have continuously served around the world since 1978. More than 20,000 Fijians have participated in United Nations peacekeeping, and 64 Fijians have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
