The inaugural Trade Mission to Papua New Guinea led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications Hon. Manoa Kamikamica concluded on a high note with strategies identified to strengthen cooperation in areas of huge potential, such as agriculture and tourism.
The Business Mission also raised the quality of bilateral economic and technical cooperation with Papua New Guinea which will ultimately contribute to Fiji’s economic growth.
The Fiji High Commission in Port Moresby, PNG led by High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr. Jackson Evans supported the first of such important initiatives aimed at fostering greater networking relationships and elevating trade relations with Papua New Guinea.
Since the reopening of the High Commission in 2023, there have been immense opportunities to advance economic interactions and deepen cultural and regional cooperation with PNG.
The High Commission is optimistic that discussions currently in progress with PNG’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the Bilateral Framework Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation will deepen work on key sectors such as Tourism, Agriculture, ICT Health and Medical Services, and many others.
High Commissioner Evans conveyed his appreciation to all the stakeholders for their efforts and for making the business mission a success.
In a statement delivered at the Business Summit on behalf of the Fiji High Commission in PNG, First Secretary Mrs. Rosa Lewanavanua reaffirmed the High Commission’s commitment to expanding bilateral and trade relations between Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
She stated that the High Commission was actively collaborating with PNG’s Department of Foreign Affairs on the Bilateral Framework Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation aimed at promoting and facilitating development and technical cooperation, and under which all existing and future Memorandum of Understanding (MOU’s) can be established.
Mrs. Lewanavanua stated that the High Commission looks forward to working with all stakeholders in elevating the trade relations, and they will ensure that everyone benefits and the revival of the Fiji and PNG Business Council was a good start.
She added that the initiative will see both nations working closely in various sectors including but not limited to Agriculture, Bilateral Trade and Investment, Health and Medical Services, Investment Promotion and Protection, Tourism and Culture, and many others.
