Secretary Blinken was welcomed and greeted by the Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Secretary Blinken’s official visit to Fiji began yesterday afternoon with a traditional welcoming ceremony accorded to mark this historic occasion, the first visit by a US Secretary of State to Fiji since 1985.
A bilateral meeting was held to elaborate on the key areas of collaboration between the two nations and map how to strengthen Fiji’s partnership with the United States.
A virtual meeting with Pacific Leaders was also convened and co-hosted by Fiji and the United States.
This meeting discussed the United States’ engagement with Pacific Island Countries on climate change, COVID-19 disaster recovery assistance and advancement of our shared commitment to democracy, regional solidarity, and prosperity in the Pacific.
Secretary Blinken also met Fijians, members of Pacific Civil Society, and businesses before he departed for Honolulu, Hawaii.
